Likes, comments and fresh content do not arrive on a fixed schedule. That unpredictability can shape behavior, but it does not justify a simple casino equation or blanket claims about addiction.

A Nature Communications study analyzed more than one million posts from over 4,000 people across several platforms. In an additional online experiment with 176 participants, the number of likes received influenced how quickly people posted again. This supports a reward-learning explanation. It measured posting behavior, not clinical addiction and not a dopamine hit on every swipe.

Endless feeds remove a natural stopping point

A book ends a page and a show reaches its credits. A personalized feed can keep loading. Together with autoplay, notifications and recommendations, that creates an environment where continuing is easier than actively stopping.

Where the casino analogy ends

Gambling includes monetary stakes, payouts and specific game structures. Social media can share some learning principles, but it is not the same thing. The evidence does not justify saying that every feed makes every person addicted.

Dopamine is not a pleasure shot per swipe

Reviews describe dopamine partly as a signal for learning and prediction error, not a directly measured burst of pleasure on every swipe. The defensible claim is narrower: social rewards can influence behavior.

The EU is examining the design as a system

In 2026, the European Commission preliminarily found that TikTok's design may breach the Digital Services Act, citing features including infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications and highly personalized recommendations. This is a preliminary finding, not a final judgment.
